Superman Returns is good but I want to comment as much on how I saw it as to the actual movie itself.
First the movie: I liked it and didn’t mind the changes from the standard “myth” as previously depicted in earlier TV shows and movies. I would have prefered less time spent on the relationship with Lois Lane and more on fighting crime (i.e. action) especially against Lex Luther (Kevin Spacey was great).
The technology: I saw the movie at an IMAX 3D theatre and the experience was much better than a typical movie. First, there were no commercials and only previews (3) for other IMAX 3D movies so the prelude was wonderfully short compared to most first run movies. The extra cost (about $5) was worth it just for that.
4 scenes from the movie had been remastered to be in 3D and it did add to the experience of the movie.
I have a small complaint about the 3D technology used. There are 3 ways that I know about to do 3D effects in video for large audiences. Red/green glasses are used when the left and right images are filtered with those colours and then superimposed on the same frame. This tends to wash out the colours and is the lowest quality 3D (but the cheapest and easiest to do). Next up in quality uses glasses with polarized lenses (horizontal and vertical) and again the left and right images are both superimposed on the same frame. This produces better colour but again since both images are on the same frame it again reduces quality. The Superman Imax 3D movie used this technique. Finally, there are shutter glasses which open and close the shutters so that the left and right eye are uncovered to see a corresponding image that alternates on the screen. These are the most expensive but result in the best images. The Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas
uses this technique with IMAX films so I know it is possible and the results are really impressive.
