The list of the top 10 Web moments from CNN.com – 15 years of the World Wide Web – Dec 13, 2005 is really lame. Obviously written by someone that didn’t “discover” the web until the late 90′s.
Here’s the list:
1. Google
2. Hotmail
3. Boom and bust
4. Tsunami and 9/11
5. Lewinsky scandal
6. Napster goes offline
7. Live 8 on AOL
8. Skype
9. Webcams and photo sharing
10. WiFi hotspots
First off, WiFi and Skype (and the relevant part of Napster) don’t involve web technology.
Live 8 on AOL might have set records but they will only be broken in the future. If you want something historic and noteworthy the Rolling Stones concert in about 1996 was the first big attempt at reaching the masses via a webcast.
Content (tsunami, 9/11, Lewinsky) is important but I would lump it all into one category. Why, by the way, did they leave out the “blog” and its impact on journalism?
Googe and Hotmail are important web companies but no more important than Amazon, Ebay, or for that matter Webvan.
My most importnat moments:
1. The release of the Mosaic browser (most importantly the fact that it came precompiled so could be used right away by nontechies)
2. The decision by US Government agencies to permit commercial use of the internet.
