Yahoo bought Flikr and now as it usually does after a buyout it is integrating the service into the mother ship. However, some Flikr users don’t like it and are planning on dropping out (or committing flikicide).
I have nothing against Yahoo and I am not a Flikr user although I have looked at some of the flikr compilations done by others. (Flikr, in case you didn’t know, is a website for upload and viewing photographs with tagging and some other nice features for community building.) I just like the fact that users are standing up for themselves and using the power of the feet (i.e. voing with their feet to leave the service). In fact, they are using flikr itself to agitate and coordinate (see the Flick off page).
A lot of the power of the web is that websites provide a meeting ground for people to interact. ebay is the biggest and best example. It provides no products itself just infrastructure and has built an empire from that. This is great for users because there are usually lots of options (i.e. competition) and we can pick the best for us. The biggest negative at the moment is instability as “the best” is constantly changing and services come and go with great frequency.
